CHAPTER FOURTEEN

VERY FEW THINGS IN life surprised Thomas. He had been born in an era where parents sold their kids into slavery for a few shillings without a backward glance. In those days you were either rich or poor, nothing in between, unless you had a title. Then you could marry into money and remain on the correct side of the equation.

His father had sold him and his sister to the Liege when they were teenagers after their mother died. The old man declared he would start his life over with a new wife and didn’t want additional mouths to feed. Liege’s men came for them at night after their father drugged them. The next morning, Thomas woke in a cage next to his sister, Marie. Bruises marked her thin pale arms and face. She looked at him with a question in her eyes that never reached her mouth because two large men came and took her from the room.

That had been the last time he saw her. Over the years he often saw her bleak expression in the faces of both men and women. Decades ago he stopped believing he would one day save her. He accepted she probably died on the operating table as one of the Liege’s hacks chopped her apart in the name of science or someone killed her stealing a piece of bread. Lives had very little value back then.

Escaping the Liege had been such a big part of his life in those days. He breathed and ate the idea of freedom. Human males were considered less valuable in the Liege Compound and were consigned to menial chores or security. For years he watched, learned and waited for an opportunity to escape. No one had been more surprised than him when he had been pulled into a room and given a shot without explanation. They kept him in that room for three days watching him. On the fourth day, the doctor sent him back to mop the floors.

Two days later he escaped with a group of friends and left the area. Traveling while his body changed had been challenging. The pain had been excruciating. Twice he told the others to leave him behind and run to safety. They refused and waited until he became strong enough to travel. Pistol had been a smart thief and good friend who stole more than enough money to pay for everyone’s passage to this country. They’d all been too terrified that the Liege would find them and remained hidden in their rooms on the ship. They’d been seasick half the time with no relief. Twice he stopped a team member from jumping off the ship to escape the discomfort. Crossing the ocean to a new country hadn’t been anything like they had expected.

Most of their group, including Pistol, had died through the years and it had been painful watching them waste away. The helplessness he had experienced remained a festering blemish on his soul. When Lillie became ill, seeing her slowly die crippled him.
